EDWARD HARKNESS CERAMICS

ANCIENT TRACES

Ancient Traces came about because of my interest in Etruscan Art.  I looked at many texts on the subject and was especially inspired by reading D.H. Lawrence's 1928 novel Etruscan Places.  Lawrence interprets Etruscan tomb paintings, dating back to 400 B.C., and claims their frescoes attest to Etruscan vitality and resourcefulness, and was a culture ahead of it's time.  In 1995 I made twelve earthenware plates and exhibited them in an 11th century Romanesque church, now a community art gallery in the historic hill-town of Tuscania, north of Rome.
