SEA PASSAGE

By Ed Harkness

Several years ago I was sailing on Lake Michigan, moving my boat from Grand Traverse Bay 250 miles south to the port of South Haven, Michigan.  On the 6th day out, my crew and I were caught in 25 knots of wind and 6' to 8' waves. We managed to sail from Pentwater to Whites Lake in five grueling hours, hanging on for dear life.  Sea Passage is an attempt to re-create that harrowing adventure in a kinetic sculpture.  The piece titled Sea Passage was shown in ArtPrize, Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2013.
