ORBS AT REST
MENU
Whether vessel-derived or ceramic sculpture or installation art, making ceramics for me is about being playful with the clay, trying to invent a new pot or form. Ideas can come from landscape, architecture, geometry, the idea of community, or sports (bicycling, boating). Something from ceramic history, something that I’ve seen in a museum or from visiting a historic site can be an impetus for making a piece; for instance Ayers Rock, Uluru, Australia. This can occur sometimes consciously, or sometimes not. In “Orbs At Rest”, the works become an exchange when compositions begin to talk to me and give way to a ‘nimbed mystery, a blue-tinted horizon, as it did to mariners of old’, to paraphrase the legendary French circumnavigator Bernard Moitessier.
